Homeschooling can be an absolute joy. Watching our children learn to write, learn shapes, learn numbers, and so much more is a gift for every home-educating parent. There are the hard days too. The days when nothing goes to plan, the days when focus is difficult, the days when we wonder if we are doing enough. We hope these quotes will provide encouragement on the good days and the hard ones alike. These are some of our favorites, with several from Maria Montessori herself.
From Maria Montessori
"It is not enough for the teacher to love the child. She must first love and understand the universe. She must prepare herself, and truly work at it."
-- Maria Montessori"Let us leave the life free to develop within the limits of the good, and let us observe this inner life developing. This is the whole of our mission."
-- Maria Montessori"The satisfaction which they find in their work has given them a grace and ease like that which comes from music."
-- Maria Montessori"Our aim is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core."
-- Maria MontessoriOn the Purpose of Education
"Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire."
-- W.B. Yeats"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."
-- Benjamin Franklin"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."
-- Albert Einstein"An observant child should be put in the way of things worth observing."
-- Charlotte Mason"Learning can only happen when a child is interested. If he's not interested, it's like throwing marshmallows at his head and calling it eating."
-- Katrina GutlebenOn Homeschooling Specifically
"Homeschooling allows you the freedom to step off the highway of learning and take a more scenic route along a dirt road."
-- Tamara L. Chilver"Homeschooling allows you to make the curriculum fit the child, rather than making the child fit the curriculum."
-- Homeschool with Love"Kids who are in school just visit life sometimes, and then they have to stop to do homework or go to sleep early or get to school on time. They are constantly reminded they are 'preparing for real life,' while being isolated from it."
-- Sandra Dodd"Once upon a time, all children were homeschooled. They were not sent away from home each day to a place just for children but lived, learned, worked, and played in the real world, alongside adults and other children of all ages."
-- Rachel GathercoleOn the Home and Family
"The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home."
-- Harold B. Lee"The home is the first and most effective place to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self-control, the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home."
-- David O. McKay"When you homeschool your children, you have to make sacrifices: of your time, of your energy, of your money. Living on one income all those years meant we did not drive expensive cars or go on extended high-end vacations. But that was not important. What was important was that we had time together. Nothing can replace that. You can have that time too. Concentrate on the positives, and enjoy your time with your kids. You will not be sorry."
