Welcome to ShillerLearning

Hi, I’m Larry Shiller, and I’d like to personally welcome you to ShillerLearning — and to this blog. Whether you’ve just discovered us or you’ve been part of our community for years, I’m glad you’re here. This is a place for customer stories, learning tips, new product updates, Montessori philosophy, and the occasional random thought. I hope you’ll find it useful, encouraging, and maybe even a little fun.

ShillerLearning was built on a simple belief: that every child deserves a joyful, effective education — and that the Montessori method, when made accessible to homeschool families, delivers exactly that. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching thousands of children fall in love with learning through our curriculum. That never gets old.

Why Montessori? The Science Behind the Method

When I first encountered the Montessori method, what struck me most was how well it aligned with what we now know about how children’s brains actually develop. Dr. Maria Montessori was not just an educator — she was a scientist. She spent decades observing children with the rigor of a researcher, and what she discovered has been validated repeatedly by modern neuroscience and developmental psychology.

📊 What the research shows: A landmark 2006 study published in Science (Lillard & Else-Quest) found that children in Montessori programs significantly outperformed peers in conventional settings on measures of reading, math, executive function, and social development. A 2017 meta-analysis confirmed these findings across multiple studies and countries. Perhaps most remarkably, the benefits were largest for children from lower-income families — suggesting that the Montessori method is especially powerful as an equalizer.

The Montessori approach works because it is built around how children actually learn — not how adults assume they should learn. It respects the child’s natural developmental timeline, engages all the senses, builds intrinsic motivation, and fosters independence from the very beginning.

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’”
— Maria Montessori

The Core Principles Behind ShillerLearning

Every ShillerLearning curriculum kit is built on the foundational principles of the Montessori method. Here’s what that means in practice:

€hands;

Hands-On Learning

Children learn by doing. Every lesson uses physical manipulatives that make abstract concepts concrete and tangible.

🎵

Multisensory Engagement

Lessons engage sight, touch, hearing, and movement simultaneously — forming stronger, more durable neural connections.

📚

100% Scripted

No Montessori background required. Every lesson is fully scripted so any parent can deliver a rich, effective lesson with confidence.

🌟

Follow the Child

Built-in assessments tell you exactly where to start and what to cover — so every child works at their own pace, not a grade-level average.

💪

Builds Independence

Children develop self-direction, confidence, and a love of learning that extends far beyond any single subject.

👪

Multi-Age Friendly

Our kits work across a wide age range, making them ideal for families with multiple children at different levels.

🧠 The neuroscience of independence: Montessori’s emphasis on self-directed learning is strongly supported by research on intrinsic motivation. Studies by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan (Self-Determination Theory) show that children who experience autonomy, competence, and connection in their learning environment develop stronger intrinsic motivation, greater persistence, and higher long-term achievement than children in externally controlled environments. This is precisely what the Montessori prepared environment is designed to cultivate.
