How to Choose the Correct Math Level for Your Child

How to Choose the Correct Math Level for Your Child

When starting with a new curriculum, or transitioning from traditional school to homeschooling, choosing the right math level can feel overwhelming. Does "level 1" mean 1st grade? Is this a rotating curriculum where everyone starts at level 1 regardless of age? Placing a child at the proper level is one of the most intimidating parts of beginning homeschool math, even for experienced home educators.

🧮 What Montessori says about mastery-based placement and progression: Maria Montessori rejected the idea of placing children by age or grade level. She believed that each child should begin exactly where their current understanding is, not where a calendar says they should be, and progress only when genuine mastery has been achieved. She designed her curriculum so that placement is always determined by what the child actually knows, not by what they are assumed to know based on their age. Research on mastery-based learning (Bloom, 1984, Educational Researcher) found that students who progressed only after demonstrating mastery of each concept achieved outcomes two standard deviations above those taught through conventional grade-level pacing, an effect Bloom called the "2 Sigma Problem." A 2020 meta-analysis in Review of Educational Research confirmed that mastery-based progression produced significantly stronger long-term retention and reduced math anxiety compared to age-based grade-level placement.

Easy Level Placement With ShillerLearning

Placing your child does not have to be confusing. Many children do not enjoy feeling tested any more than parents enjoy wading through resources trying to figure out where to begin. Our system is easy, quick, and effective.

🎯 The 7-step placement process
Step 1. Start with the first book in your kit.
Step 2. Open to the front cover where you will see the Quick Start Guide.

Step 3. Read through the guide and prepare to work through the Review Tests.
Step 4. Begin at Review Test 1 in the book. The introduction will tell you which materials you need. Gather them and get ready.
Step 5. Prepare your child for the review. Each test reminds your child that the review exists to help them get the most out of their math time. The child-friendly language and step-by-step instructions make this a relaxed experience for both of you.
Step 6. Administer the test and take notes as you go. All you need to do is follow the script and work through the test. Each question lists the corresponding lessons where the concepts were introduced. Note any lessons your child needs to cover.
Step 7. If your child has lessons that need to be introduced, begin with those before moving on. Once all lessons in a section are complete, your child will complete the review test for that section again to confirm mastery before advancing.

💡 Helpful tips for the placement process
  • If your child masters the first two tests in a book, consider jumping ahead to the last test in the book to see if they master that as well. Or, if a quick flip-through of a section confirms your child has solid knowledge of all the concepts, you may choose to ask only the questions you suspect they may not yet know.
  • Most review tests take no more than 10 to 15 minutes. If your child becomes fatigued during the process, it is recommended to do one test per day until placement is complete.

This process is easy, enjoyable, and quick for both you and your child. It requires no prep work and very little follow-up. Then you can open and go with the curriculum at exactly the right lesson.
