Summertime is often when many families take a break from homeschooling. Even those who school year-round usually go a bit lighter in the summer to enjoy the warm days. It is the perfect time to nail down skills your students have previously struggled with and explore a new subject of interest. We are thrilled to bring you this free summer activity pack.
Summer Activity Ideas for Kids
In this over 30-page activity pack, you will find a wide variety of easy-to-assemble activities and the free printables ShillerLearning families have come to know and love. In addition to the activities in this pack, here are a few more ideas to keep the summer full of learning and fun.
Create Your Own Lesson
Kids sometimes say, "If I was in charge, I would..." Give them the chance to do it their way. Set them loose with materials and let them design their own dream homeschool or summer lesson plan. Guide them in researching something they are interested in, encourage them to create their own learning, and see what they come up with. You might be pleasantly surprised as they design an awesome game or develop a new skill (without realizing it).
You-Pick Farms
This is always a fun way to create family memories. Find a local you-pick farm and head out to harvest your own food. Many of these farms grow berries, and sometimes what you eat as you pick is free. Bring your bounty home and enjoy baking, canning, or freezing together. You can also check fallingfruit.org to find free local foraging and you-pick options near you.
Amazing Race
Let the kids come up with their own version of the Amazing Race. Have them create activities and pit stops around your house, the block, or your town. Then let them get together with friends and play out their show. Older children might even enjoy filming and editing their own episode.
Progressive Game Night
Get together with neighbors and nearby friends. Have each family choose a lawn game, board game, or outdoor activity such as sidewalk chalk or sprinklers. The kids can work together to decide who will host which activity, make a master map ahead of time, and set the schedule. Each home hosts something different for a fun afternoon or evening of time together as you walk or bike between houses. Invite plenty of friends, have healthy snacks and water on hand, and enjoy.
How to Use This Free Activity Pack
There is no right or wrong way to use this pack. We have provided a book list covering all reading abilities. The rest of the pack is open-ended. You can work through it in order, pick and choose the activities you prefer, let the kids choose, do one a day, or do them all in a week. It is entirely up to you. Most activities require little to no prep work and only a few need materials. It is worth peeking ahead to see what you might need to gather or borrow from a friend.
