20+ Pages of Montessori Sensorial Sensory Activities for Kids

Sensory-based learning and multisensory education have become widely discussed in recent years. As awareness of ADHD, autism, and other learning differences grows, so does recognition of the role sensory stimulation plays in education. It is worth noting, however, that a multisensory education is excellent for all children. Teaching to all the senses, especially with young children, is nothing new.

🧮 What Montessori says about sensorial works and the developing child: Maria Montessori placed sensorial education at the very foundation of her curriculum. She believed that the senses are the gateways through which the young child absorbs the world, and that refining and educating the senses is the essential first step in all intellectual development. Montessori designed an entire category of materials, known as sensorial works, specifically to isolate and develop each sense: visual discrimination, tactile sensitivity, auditory acuity, olfactory and gustatory awareness, and stereognostic perception. She began her work with children who would today be identified as having learning disabilities and discovered that when the senses were fully engaged, all children, regardless of ability, learned more readily and with greater joy. Research on multisensory instruction (Shams and Seitz, 2008, Trends in Cognitive Sciences) found that learning experiences that engage multiple senses simultaneously produce significantly stronger memory encoding, retention, and transfer than single-sense instruction. A 2020 meta-analysis in Educational Psychology Review confirmed that multisensory teaching approaches produced the largest learning gains for children with learning differences, while also producing meaningful gains for typically developing children.

Sensorial Lessons for Children of All Ages and Abilities

Infants all the way through teenagers, and even adults, can embrace concepts and develop a love of learning when all their senses take part. While resources for preschoolers are easy to find, sensory activities for older children have historically been much harder to locate. Sensorial works are a key part of Montessori toddler and preschool programs, but they remain incorporated throughout the older years as well. Finding at-home resources has proven difficult for ShillerLearning families, and that is exactly why we created this pack.

We are pleased to introduce our Sensory Activity Pack. At over 20 pages long and designed for all ages, it brings multisensory learning to your family in an easy and accessible way.

What You Will Love About This Pack

🌟 Wide age range

We worked hard to select Montessori-inspired sensorial activities for all ages. The minimum age listed for each activity is simply a starting point. We have provided ways to expand the works for all ages, including teenagers. If a starting age is in the single digits and you have a double-digit child, still give it a chance. You may be pleasantly surprised.

👁️ Engages children's heightened senses

Did you know children hear more sounds than adults? Their eyes perceive different colors and brightness than ours, their sense of touch is more acute, and their taste buds are still developing in ways that cause them to experience flavors differently. When children say something is too spicy, too loud, too itchy, or too bright, it genuinely is for them. Their bodies are developing and learning how to interact with the world. Everything is heightened, and this is even more true for children with special needs. In this pack, we have made sure to involve all the senses in a gentle and deliberate way. All works can be adapted to the level your child is at.

☕ Excellent for special needs, learning differences, and typical development

A multisensory education is not designed for one type of learner. If your child has learning differences or special needs, they can benefit from this pack. If your child does not, they can benefit too. You know your child best. Some works may push them to the edge of what they can comfortably tolerate, particularly those involving touch and taste. If your child struggles with a particular area, start slowly. It is perfectly fine to work through just one step per day, or to simply introduce a work and describe it over several days before diving in. This pack is a guide to help you curate your own journey at the pace that works best for your child and family.

Sensory activities for children of all ages

🧠 Expands sensory awareness for parents too

As we grow older, we become less attuned to our senses. By engaging in these activities with your children, you may find yourself reconnecting with your own sensory experience. These are activities that can be genuinely enjoyed by adults. When combined with mindfulness practices, which the Montessori method actively encourages, adults can grow their own sensory awareness alongside their children. You are not only setting an example by participating, you are developing your own brain too.

🎵 Includes a bonus song

Everyone who downloads this pack receives a bonus downloadable song from ShillerLearning. Incorporating music into learning is a wonderful way to help concepts come alive.
